What does "Sync" actually do, and what's getting synced?

"Sync" keeps your to-dos in step between this app and Supernote. Anything in your Supernote to-do app flows into the app, and any change you make in the app flows back. Both directions go through the Supernote cloud — the same place your device syncs to — so a to-do you tick off on your tablet shows as done here, and a to-do you add here appears on your tablet after its next cloud sync. Sync is only about to-dos and lists; it's different from "Push", which sends to-dos out to other apps.

What's the difference between "Sync" and "Push"?

They're two separate things. "Sync" moves to-dos between this app, the Supernote cloud, and your device — the Supernote-to-Supernote flow that's always on. "Push" sends your to-dos OUT to a third-party app like Todoist, Apple Reminders or Google Tasks. So you'll see "Sync now" / "Next sync in…" for the Supernote side, and "Push now" / "Next push in…" for sending tasks elsewhere. Turning one on or off doesn't affect the other.

Is syncing two-way? If I edit a to-do in the app, does it change on my Supernote?

Yes, fully two-way. Changes you make on your Supernote (add, rename, complete, reschedule, delete a to-do or list) come into the app, and changes you make in the app are written back to the cloud, so they appear on your device after its next cloud sync. The app uses your existing signed-in session, so changes show up under your own account just as if you'd made them on the tablet.

What counts as a "to-do" that gets synced?

A to-do is an item from your Supernote To-Do app on your device — the same tasks and task-lists you see in the app on your device. Each has a title, a done/not-done state, an optional due date, and the list it belongs to. Some to-dos are also linked to a handwritten note; that link comes across too, which lets the app optionally show the note associated with the task. Handwritten pages, documents and PDFs on the device themselves are NOT to-dos — only tasks are synced.

How does the app see my Supernote to-dos — do I give it a password or token?

No password or token is ever copied out. When you sign in, the app shows Supernote's real login page inside the window. After that, it reads your to-dos by asking the already-logged-in Supernote page for them, using the same session your login created. Your login stays put between launches, so you normally only sign in once.

Does the app upload anything to my Supernote, or change files on my tablet?

It never writes to your tablet over the local connection — the Browse & Access link is read-only, only ever used to copy handwritten notes off the device. The only changes it makes are to your to-dos (add/complete/rename/reschedule/delete), and those go through the Supernote cloud under your own account. It does not touch your documents, folders or note files.

Does syncing happen automatically, or do I have to press a button?

By default it's automatic: the app checks on the interval you set in Settings → Scheduling (default every 5 minutes), and the rate is the same whether the window is in front or in the background. It also syncs once when the app launches. Setting sync to Manual stops the automatic checks, with one exception: if pushing is on Auto, the app still syncs right before each scheduled push (a push always syncs first). You can also sync on demand any time with Sync now , which forces an immediate check. Switching to the window, restoring it from the Dock, or waking your Mac deliberately doesn't trigger a sync — it sticks to your schedule.

Can I make it only sync when I ask it to (manual only)?

Yes — switch the sync schedule to Manual in Settings → Scheduling, and the recurring background checks stop. Your changes still apply instantly on screen and are saved safely on this Mac; they're sent to the cloud on the next sync rather than immediately. In Manual, a sync happens only when: you press Sync now, the app starts, or a push runs (a push always syncs first — so with automatic Push on, the app keeps syncing on that schedule too).

Can I change how often it syncs in the background?

Yes. The sync interval is adjustable in Settings → Scheduling (default every 5 minutes; from 1 minute up to 10 hours). That interval is the whole story — the app checks at the same rate whether the window is in front or in the background. (This applies when sync is set to Auto; on Manual there's no recurring checking at all.)

What does "Next sync in…" in the sidebar mean?

It's a countdown to the next automatic Supernote sync — the next time the app checks the cloud for to-do changes. When it reaches zero it syncs and the timer resets. If you've set syncing to manual, there's no countdown. (This is separate from any "Next push" countdown for sending to-dos to other apps.)

Does the app sync the order I've arranged my lists in?

The order of to-dos within a list does sync. But the order of the lists themselves is a local preference in the app and isn't carried to or from Supernote, because Supernote doesn't store a list ordering to sync. So rearranging your lists here won't reorder them on your tablet, and vice versa.

Will the app keep syncing when it's minimized or my Mac is asleep?

When minimized or in the background it keeps syncing on your normal schedule — the rate is the same whether the window is in front or not. While your Mac is asleep nothing syncs; once it wakes, any check that came due during sleep runs shortly afterwards (when sync is on Auto and you're inside your Active hours), so you catch up without pressing anything. If you want an instant refresh after waking, press Sync now.

What do I need set up on my Supernote for my to‑dos to sync?

## Supernote tablet setup Three things, all on the tablet: 1. Be signed in to your Supernote account. Go to Settings → My Account and log in (email or phone plus the verification code). Relay and the Partner app sign in to this same account — that's how everyone sees the same to-dos. 2. Turn on to-do syncing. Go to Settings → My Account → Data Sync and make sure it's on. This is the switch that sends your to-dos to Supernote's cloud — it's separate from file syncing. On recent firmware it's on by default, but if your device is older (or was set up a while ago) it may still be off, and that's the most common reason to-dos don't appear. 3. Choose Supernote Cloud as your drive. Go to Settings → Drive (called Synchronization on older firmware) and select Supernote Cloud (first time, you'll also pick a server location). To-dos only travel through Supernote's own cloud — Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive sync your files, not your to-dos, so with a third-party drive selected your to-dos won't reach Relay or the Partner app. Then just have the tablet on any Wi-Fi with internet. It does not need to be on the same network as your Mac — to-dos go through the cloud. A change made on the tablet arrives after its next sync (swipe down from the top and tap the Sync icon to trigger one right away).

I use a private cloud — can Relay still sync my to-dos?

Quite possibly — but read the caveat at the end. Relay reads your to-dos from Supernote's official Cloud, and Supernote doesn't sync to-dos to private clouds at this time. So if you signed out of your Supernote account when you set up your private cloud, your to-dos aren't syncing anywhere — and Relay has nothing to work with. The good news: on the device, those are two separate settings. Settings → Drive is where your notes and files sync — that's what private cloud takes over. Settings → My account is your Supernote sign-in, and it's what syncs your to-dos. Private cloud doesn't touch it. So even with all your notes and files going to your private cloud, you can sign back in to My account with your Supernote login and turn on to-do syncing — and only your to-dos will sync through the official Supernote cloud. That's all Relay needs. The honest caveat: I don't run a private cloud myself, so I haven't verified this end-to-end. If you're on a private cloud, treat the free trial as your test bench — every feature works, no card needed — and see for yourself before buying. And whichever way it goes, I'd genuinely appreciate hearing the result through the contact form : you'd be settling it for every private-cloud user who comes after you.

Do the "Select Folders to Sync" and "Auto Sync" settings affect my to‑dos?

No. Those two settings (under Settings → Drive ) control which of your files — notebooks and documents — are backed up to your cloud drive, and whether that happens automatically. Your to-dos are account data with their own switch ( Settings → My Account → Data Sync ) and sync regardless of which folders you tick. Folder selection and Auto Sync are still worth setting up for backing up your notebooks — they're just not part of to-do syncing.

What is the device/connection item in the sidebar, and why does it show a name?

That sidebar item shows whether the app is connected to your physical Supernote over your local Wi-Fi ("Browse & Access"), separate from the cloud. When connected, it reads the device's own name (for example "Supernote A5 X2 Manta") straight off the device. This local connection is used to fetch your actual handwritten notes (associated with a task you're syncing) — it is NOT how to-dos sync (those go via the cloud). If you don't want notes fetched or attached to a task when you push it to your task apps, you don't have to enable this feature.

What's the difference between the Supernote cloud connection and the Browse & Access connection?

Two completely separate connections. (1) The cloud connection (over the internet, via your Supernote account) syncs your to-dos both ways. (2) Browse & Access is a direct link to your tablet over your home Wi-Fi (the device runs a small file server while it's switched on). The app uses Browse & Access to pull the actual handwritten note pages a to-do links to, converting them to a viewable PDF — this is optional and up to you. Your to-dos sync fine even if Browse & Access is off; for the notes themselves, the app can also offer to download the last copy your device synced to the Supernote cloud — handy when the tablet's off or away, though it may be behind your latest ink.

Do I need to be connected to anything for syncing to work?

For to-do syncing you need an internet connection and to be signed in to your Supernote account — that's it. Your tablet does NOT need to be nearby or even switched on, because to-dos travel through the cloud. For handwritten notes, having your Supernote on the same Wi-Fi (with Browse & Access on) gets you the latest ink; if the device isn't reachable, the app can offer the note's last-synced copy from the Supernote cloud instead.

Does my Supernote need to be on the same Wi-Fi as my Mac?

Only for handwritten notes, not for to-dos. To-dos sync over the internet through the cloud, so Wi-Fi proximity doesn't matter for them. But to fetch the actual ink pages of a linked note, your Supernote and Mac must be on the same Wi-Fi network (not a guest network) and Browse & Access must be on.

How do I connect the app to my Supernote device?

First turn on Browse & Access on the tablet: swipe down from the top of the Supernote screen, tap the Browse & Access icon, and tap OK on the popup showing an address like http://192.168.x.x:8089. Make sure the Supernote and your Mac are on the same Wi-Fi. The app then finds the device automatically by scanning your network. If auto-detect doesn't find it, you can type in the address shown on the device's screen. Keep the tablet awake with the Browse & Access screen open while it connects.

My Supernote's IP address keeps changing — do I have to reconnect every time?

Usually no. The app remembers the last address and tries it directly on startup; if it's changed, it scans your network to find the tablet automatically. Addresses can change because your router hands out a new one (DHCP), and the tablet drops Wi-Fi in deep sleep — so if it won't connect, wake the Supernote and re-open the Browse & Access screen, and the app will pick up the new address.

If I disconnect the device in the app, does it reconnect by itself?

Not for the rest of that session. Choosing Disconnect tells the app you deliberately want it off, so it stops auto-reconnecting until you press Scan/Connect again or restart the app. Your saved device address is kept, so a restart will reconnect on its own. To-do syncing is unaffected — disconnecting only stops the local note connection.

My to‑dos aren't showing up — what should I check?

In order: (1) the tablet is signed in to the same Supernote account you signed in to Relay with; (2) Settings → My Account → Data Sync is on; (3) Settings → Drive is set to Supernote Cloud , not Dropbox/Google Drive/OneDrive; (4) the tablet is on Wi-Fi with internet, then swipe down and tap the Sync icon to force a sync. Also note the to-do feature needs reasonably recent firmware (mid-2024 or later) — update the tablet if it's been a while.

Your to-dos keep syncing normally — that's the cloud, which doesn't need the device. What's affected is handwritten notes: if you try to open a linked note while the tablet is offline, the app shows the last copy it saved rather than stalling. For a note it hasn't saved yet, it offers two ways forward: turn on Browse & Access (recommended — gets the latest ink) or download the note's last-synced copy from the Supernote cloud. The sidebar connection item shows the device as disconnected, and the app keeps quietly re-trying to find it, so the moment you switch Browse & Access back on (on the same Wi-Fi) it reconnects and catches up on any notes it still needs.

I added a to-do offline (no internet). Will it still get to my Supernote?

Yes. If a change can't reach the cloud right away, the app remembers it and automatically sends it once the connection is back — so a to-do you add, complete, rename or delete won't be lost. It then re-checks to confirm the change landed. (Deletes are handled especially carefully so a momentary glitch can never silently wipe a list.)

Why won't the app blank my list if a sync comes back empty?

The app has built-in safety so a temporary cloud hiccup can never wipe your to-dos by mistake. If a sync comes back incomplete, or suddenly returns zero to-dos when you were holding a full list, the app refuses to apply it and keeps your last known-good list, retrying instead. A genuine "clear everything" only takes effect after it's confirmed on a second clean check. So a real deletion does sync through — it just has to be confirmed first.

Is it safe to have multiple devices/apps editing the same to-dos at once?

Yes. The app reads complete, consistent snapshots and writes your changes back through the cloud — the same shared place your tablet syncs with — so edits from the app and the device merge together. There are guards against a half-finished read being treated as the truth, so concurrent changes don't accidentally undo each other or blank your list.

Why does my linked note say "Update available" or look out of date?

The app keeps a saved copy of each handwritten note for instant, offline viewing. If you've written more on that note since the app last copied it, the app flags "Update available" instead of silently re-fetching (re-loading a big note takes time and you might be mid-edit). Refresh it on demand and the flag clears. It can detect a newer version even while offline, by comparing when your to-do was last changed against when it saved the note. ---

The sync pill says "Couldn't reach the cloud — will retry" — did something break?

Accepted Answer

No — Supernote's cloud is sometimes slow to answer, and this is the app being honest about it. It gives each check a generous window (about 12 seconds) and retries once before giving up on that pass; if it still can't get through, it shows this message and simply tries again on the next scheduled check (or when you press Sync now).
