I selected some to-dos and then clicked a list in the sidebar — why did my selection disappear?

Clicking into the sidebar (to switch lists, open Settings, etc.) is treated as moving on, so it clears your selection. If you wanted to move the selected items to that list, use the "Move" button in the bottom bar instead, which puts the sidebar into list-picking mode without losing your selection.
